Description

It has a characteristic tart citrus odour, and is cold pressed from the rinds of ripe or nearly ripe grapefruit. It is is generally regarded as an uplifting oil and thus is useful where stress, mood swings, depressive thoughts and exhaustion are indicated. In cosmetic applications it is recommended for oily skin types, is often used in acne applications, and as a tonic for scalp and hair products.

The properties are similar to White Grapefruit but like the fruit, the oil tends to be a bit less tart than the white one.

Contraindications

Photosensitising (low risk).

Photosensitising means that an oil can cause skin to become more sensitive to the sun. This is true of many of the citrus oils, especially Bergamot, which contains bergaptene, a constituent that causes photosensitivity.

Skin sensitisation if oxidized. Maximum dermal use level is 4%; if applied to the skin at over maximum use level, skin must not be exposed to sunlight or sunbed rays for 12 hours, otherwise has GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe). Dilute before using. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.
